Employers learned a lot about L&D in 2018 — but what was the biggest takeaway?
"In today's economy, market forces are shifting so constantly, and technologies emerging so rapidly, that a learning culture is not just a nice-to-have, it's a necessity for survival," said Gabriella Kellerman, chief innovation officer at BetterUP, in an interview with HR Dive earlier this year.
Change might have been the only constant in a tech-driven, job seeker's talent market , but some employers adapted by renewing their commitment to L&D. To retain more employees and get ahead of ever-widening skills gaps, large companies made substantial investments — like Tyson Foods, which used VR to train workers, and Walmart, which completely overhauled its approach to upskilling its workforce. Considering the employee demand for upskilling, HR professionals sought to continuously update workers' knowledge of hard skills, innovate new ways to coach them in soft skills and design learning initiatives that align with their five-year career plans.
So, as HR professionals prepare to face these trends anew in 2019 — and as employees resolve to set new professional goals — we revisited our most popular learning and development stories from 2018.
