Dive Brief:
- Google will soon give employers the ability to highlight remote job postings in search results, Recruiting Headlines reported. The Google for Jobs platform will allow job seekers to directly search for a position they can perform remotely. To post their remote jobs, businesses will need to enter the appropriate data on the platform.
- Jobs must be totally remote for Google labeling, rather than partial work-at-home arrangements or other work options that aren’t totally remote, according to Search Engine Journal. Employers will use the term "telecommute" to categorize remote work arrangements on the platform and specify at least one country from which applicants are eligible to work.
- Search Engine Journal said Google is expected to launch the remote-job labeling service shortly, giving businesses time to prepare now.
Dive Insight:
Remote work has become one of the most desirable perks among workers, a fact that's not lost on job search platforms like Google for Jobs. More than half (56%) of organizations worldwide offer some type of remote work arrangement, according to OWL Labs' 2018 Global State of Remote Work report. The study also found that employees who work remotely at least once a month are 24% happier than those who don't work remote at all. Remote work is a talent magnet that can pay big dividends for employers and job seekers.
As in-demand as remote-work arrangements are, they come with internal challenges; not all employees are suited to working off-site, and for those who are, their workdays are often long and stressful. Burnout and the resulting health issues that come with it often go unnoticed by management. Employers need remote-work policies to set parameters and expectations for employees. Remote policies should specify which positions are eligible for remote work and what electronic tools are needed to support remote workers, and ensure that there's time for interaction between remote workers and their colleagues.
