Dive Brief:
- Recently, Tudor Havriliuc, VP of HR for Facebook, participated in Glassdoor's Best Places to Work Roadshow. The event offered an insider's perspective of the culture and other factors that contribute to the experience of working for some of the nation's top companies.
- Havriliuc told Business Insider about the one interview question he likes hearing most from candidates. "I want them to ask me what I would think that success looks like in their job and how they can make the biggest possible impact," Havriliuc said.
- In other words, he enjoyed speaking with candidates who were directly focused on their own success, saying it meshes well with the nature of Facebook's hard-driven culture. "I enjoy meeting someone who demonstrates curiosity about how they can overachieve in a new job," Haviriliuc told Business Insider.
Dive Insight:
Recruiters can learn much from Havriliuc's thoughts on the subject of interview questions. It's not just about rattling off a series of questions and hoping to hear a few good answers; any well-versed candidate can achieve that easily.
What does more to reveal a candidate's fitness for a given role is whether they ask questions of their own, and whether they do so in a way that demonstrates they are serious about the role, performing to their best ability and focusing on long-term performance.
HR Dive touched on this aspect of recruiting when we highlighted the ways by which HR can reduce barriers to employment for military veterans. Candidates who can effectively communicate their value and willingness to work hard in a new role are definitely worth considering for employment.
Cultural fit is another factor. If a candidate understands the given culture by the way he or she asks questions, it's generally a sure sign that this is someone to hire.
